All throughout my construction career, it was pretty common for me to barbecue for the crews.
The barbecue that changed everything happened almost 25 years ago, on a project called Sutter Connect in Sacramento, California. This project required everyone to make the commitment and sacrifice to work 7 days a week for at least four months. I decided if we were going to be there 7 days a week, why not barbecue every Saturday?
Each week, I happily planned the menu, prepared the food, barbecued, and typically fed about 40-50 guys. It was so much fun, we did it in shifts, each crew ate at different times allowing everyone to enjoy fresh hot barbecue when it was their time for lunch.
The spices were a huge hit!!
As the weeks passed, I soon perfected what is now known as "The Original Spice Blend". A blend of 13 organic spices, that were used in so many different ways, with so many different recipes. It is fun to think back now how it all started with my desire to create a dry rub for the Tri Tip Roasts I was barbecuing that very first week.
It happened because we appreciated our guys. I'm very grateful that they were so committed to getting the project completed on time. In the end, I have to say, I was the one who received so much more. Besides blending the spices, the barbecues taught me about creating and planning, food preparation, timing, serving food in a non-traditional environment and the love of cooking for large groups of people.
Since then, I have made many, many batches of
"The Original Spice Blend” for colleagues, family and friends.
A very important part of who we are as a company is being able to give back to our community. We have a very special program called "The TABLE".
The TABLE program offers group cooking classes and table conversations for women and their children who have escaped their domestic violence life and are transitioning back out on their own.
Empowering them with cooking skills, recipes, often cooking supplies and healthy conversations for the family to have at The TABLE.
Besides launching the "Rock the Boat Spice Co" blends, what else is in store, you ask??
Well, after an AMAZING 40 year career in commercial construction, I have decided to go back to school for a degree in Culinary Arts and ultimately become a Chef. I have such a passion to create and love, love, love to cook and experiment. This Culinary School will introduce me to even more cultures around the world, with new ideas for new flavors.
I have no doubt this will inspire me to create even more unique and tasty blends. I look forward to sharing my new creations with all of YOU very soon!!
